چکیده
Abstract We dated syntectonic calcites on fault planes from the southern branch of western North Anatolian (NAF) in northern Turkey using U-Th geochronology. selected strike-slip faults that are kinematically related to current regional strain field. The isotopic ages cluster around different periods during past ~700 k.y. most prominent peak 510.5 ± 9.5 ka (1σ) is consistent with maximum cumulative offset data and tectonic plate motions measured by GPS data, highlighting fact present configuration NAF Marmara region started at ca. 500 or earlier. These new ages, combined previous considerations tectonics, reveal faulting along initiated primarily least a few hundred thousand years earlier than timing suggested for NAF. This study presents an innovative approach constrain initiation currently active segments Marmara. geochronology fault-hosted calcite thus has wide application determining absolute episodes wider shear zones boundaries.

Focal mechanism determinations of earthquakes along the North Anatolian fault, beneath the Sea of Marmara and the Aegean Sea
We determined the centroid moment tensor (CMT) solutions of earthquakes that occurred along the North Anatolian fault (NAF) beneath the Sea of Marmara and the Aegean Sea, using data obtained from Turkey’s broadband seismograph network. The CMT solution of the 2014 Aegean Sea earthquake (Mw 6.9) represents a strike-slip fault, consistent with the geometry of the NAF, and the source-time function...
متن کاملPaleoseismic Evidence of Characteristic Slip on the Western Segment of the North Anatolian Fault, Turkey
We have conducted a paleoseismic investigation of serial fault rupture at one site along the 110-km rupture of the North Anatolian fault that produced the Mw 7.4 earthquake of 17 August 1999. The benefit of using a recent rupture to compare serial ruptures lies in the fact that the location, magnitude, and slip vector of the most recent event are all very well documented. We wished to determine...
متن کاملA comparison between the Kazerun (Iran) and the North Anatolian (Turkey) fault systems in fault interaction and seismicity migration based on the spatiotemporal analysis of earthquakes
The Kazerun Fault System (KFS) is a right-lateral strike slip fault system in the middle part of the Zagros seismogenic zone in Iran. Historical and instrumental earthquake data catalogs of this fault system show good evidence of fault interactions and seismic migrations. This study provides evidence for the migration of seismicity in the middle part of the Zagros region along the segments of t...
متن کاملAn aseismic slip transient on the North Anatolian Fault
Constellations of Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) satellites with short repeat time acquisitions allow exploration of active faults behavior with unprecedented temporal resolution. Along the North Anatolian Fault (NAF) in Turkey, an 80 km long section has been creeping at least since the 1944, Mw 7.3 earthquake near Ismetpasa, with a current Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR)-deriv...
